Roy Ernest Amiss

Inspired by Surrealism, I engaged in experiments exploring the unconscious via dreams and automatism by drawing and painting. What was notable about these experiments, was the personal and universal character of the forms generated, and the particular space that was created. The forms were biomorphic – resembling living organisms, but also intercut with linear entities articulated in a fantastic baroque space. Drawing these forms is completely natural and instinctive for me, and I believe this represents a post-Freudian expression of the unconscious – providing a more heterogeneous and complex view of a mind. This painting began as a pencil drawing on paper, and rendered on canvas using classical oil painting techniques.

Roy Amiss is a painter, inventor, musician and songwriter. Influenced by surrealism, op-art, classical art, science and philosophy, Trained in sciences and studied fine art painting at Cheltenham Art College, gaining a 2:1 BA(hon) degree. Whilst a student his work sold at both Christie’s and Bonham’s auction houses. He achieved national prominence with his Tower of Babel art installation at the Amsterdam art fair, and his optical ‘hand-painted holograph’ paintings were shown in Gallery 286.
