White Swan

White Swan by Orde-MccGwire, Stone sculpture, 2021

Selected for the 2025 London Art Biennale, United Kingdom. Stone sculpture, 2021. 24x54x9cm.

Flat planes were used here to create the form. The edges they naturally create, give clean contour lines across the sculpture, that accentuate the shape. The flat planes also pull light along them, which brings light to down the front of the sculpture. This graceful movement of light is used to describe the graceful form of this creature.

Sophie Orde-MccGwire uses traditional hand carving methods and direct carving. Her work is inspired by Noguchi, Epstein and Young, but mostly is drawn from the material she uses. Each stone has different properties, beauty, surface and colour that she seeks to accentuate in her sculptures, keep a sense of the block of stone and it’s 140 million year old properties.
