Mary Whitlock
Panorama
Selected for the 2025 London Art Biennale, United Kingdom. Oil on canvas, 2025. 40x40cm.
In Panorama, Mary Whitlock depicts the warped reflections of herself and the surrounding kitchen in a cooking pan. It is a playful exploration of the unexpected, capturing a surprise everyday moment in which we see ourselves and the world around us from a new point of view. Mundane acts such as putting a pan on a stove can ground us, whilst creating accidental reflections that catch us off guard. Here, in this seemingly fleeting moment, we delve into the internal life of the figure and celebrate the wonder of the ordinary.
Mary Whitlock is a London-born artist who uses a realistic style to explore how we perceive ourselves, the emotions we express, and the spiritual and unexpected of everyday life. Mary studied Art History at The University of St Andrews, exploring the academic and critical engagement with art, enriching her own artistic practice. Having graduated in June 2024, she has set up an art studio in Kent, using oil paint to depict portraits and interior scenes.
