Koloman Wagner

Compact Melody – Motif 6 is a sound-sculptural installation that explores the mutual origin of form in sculpture and music. At the center of the work is a freely designed wood sculpture composed of multiple glued trapezoidal-shaped pine wooden elements. The visual shape of the sculpture is made audible through a physics-based transformation, in which each element is assigned to a point in time and the curvatures are translated into pitches. The sonification creates a link between visual form and musical structure, inviting the viewer to explore musical concepts such as melody and rhythm through sculpture.

Koloman Wagner, born in 1992 in Austria, studied physics and earned his doctorate at the University of Regensburg. Inspired by the concept of the space-time continuum, his sculptures, installations, and musical compositions follow an interdisciplinary approach in which he translates spatial and temporal structures into one another. His work has been recognized with international art awards and presented in numerous exhibitions, including institutional venues across Germany and Europe.
