This work explores the duality of enlightenment—the pursuit of knowledge and truth, and the discomfort that often comes with it. The candle, with its flame directed towards the subject’s eye, represents both illumination and sacrifice. While light is often associated with clarity and wisdom, here it also becomes an intrusive force, one that burns and distorts. The contrast between the grayscale exterior and the raw, exposed flesh beneath reflects the tension between outward composure and inner vulnerability. The piece invites the viewer to contemplate the weight of awareness—how seeing too much, too clearly, can be both a revelation and a burden.

Erwin Viado is a visual artist exploring perception, identity, and emotional complexity. Using pastel palettes and fragmented realism, he creates introspective works rooted in popular culture. After a corporate career in Dubai, he pursued art full-time, with exhibitions in Dubai, Oxford, Tokyo, and Manila. Now based in London, Viado invites viewers to reflect on hidden truths and evolving human narratives.
