This painting explore the suppression of free speech through the symbolic muffled mouth, reflecting how individual expression is silenced under societal and political pressures. Ornate Chinese ornaments fill the space behind the muffled mouth, emphasizing how voices are replaced with state-approved imagery and cultural aesthetics. The works critique conformity and authoritarian control, urging viewers to reflect on the loss of autonomy and the forces that restrict human expression.
Born in Paris in 1980, Nelly Lim immigrated to Quebec in 1990, completing her studies in Brossard and Greenfield Park before earning a BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University. Her artistic journey deepened through early exhibitions starting in 2004 and a transformative move to Xiamen, China, in 2009. From 2014 to 2024, she exhibited with MX Gallery under Mensi & Rioux, and her work is now shown at the Golden Crab Gallery.
