Freddie McAlpine-Riddell

Made in collaboration for fashion designer Joshua Kane’s decade runway show, Heritage was created using upcycled scrap metal tools and construction debris, with the addition of tailoring scissors in homage to Kane’s industry. The sculpture captures the tailor’s roots of rural Oxfordshire, coupled with his exuberant and flamboyant style, through the precise and delicate horses head, sporting a punk inspired scissor mane. Heritage was the centre piece of Kane’s catwalk and was featured in all hero shots from the press corner. This piece pushes boundaries beyond the figurative, exaggerating features without total distraction of the accurate anatomy.

Based in Hackney, East London, Freddie creates sustainable wildlife sculptures from upcycled metal and hand tools. His materials are left unaltered, honouring the tools’ previous life and form. His sculptures are accessible and understandable, depicting animals and showcasing tools that everyone can identify and build a relationship with. Freddie hopes his practice can help encourage creative ways to repurpose debris, in turn minimising and reimagining waste and how the world interacts with it.
