Andrea by Ester Punzano, Oil on canvas, 2020

Selected for the 2025 London Art Biennale, Spain. Oil on canvas, 2020. 97x130cm.

This half-length portrait is a figure study. It shows the profile of a little girl: Andrea, the artist’s daughter. The main focus of the painting, however, was to depict the complexity of the dress’s lace. The naturalist style used was made to resemble that of classic European baroques, taking inspiration from Velázquez’s work. This was achieved through the image’s lighting, dark background, the presence of a single protagonist in the shot, and the use of loose brush strokes. Like this, the artist represents a modern scene of a present-day little girl through a classical style.
