Sheep Head

Sheep Head by Andrei Dorian Gavrila, Photograph on dibond, 2024

Selected for the 2025 London Art Biennale, Romania. Photograph on dibond, 2024. 90x60cm.

A moment both haunting and intimate — the severed head of a sheep, balanced with quiet finality on a butcher’s shoulder, was captured in Tunisia in 2024.The image’s raw, symbolic resonance speaks to themes of tradition, labor, and mortality. At once visceral and symbolic, it blurs the line between ritual and routine, tenderness and violence. Presented at the Brussels Street Photography Festival, the work was awarded Second Prize by a jury chaired by renowned British photographer Martin Parr.
